Is your computer slowing your business down? Simple tech checks for small firms
Slow laptops, full inboxes and forgotten updates cost small businesses time every day. A few simple checks can make a real difference.
For many small businesses, the office computer or laptop is the engine room: quotes, invoices, emails, your website, social media. When it slows down, everything slows down. Here are simple checks anyone can do.
1. Keep everything updated
Operating system updates for Windows and macOS fix security holes and often improve performance. Turn on automatic updates, and restart your computer at least once a week so they can install.
2. Check your storage
A nearly full drive slows a computer noticeably. Clear out old downloads, empty the recycle bin, and move old photos and files to cloud storage or an external drive.
3. Tame start-up programs
Many programs quietly launch every time you switch on. On Windows, open Task Manager and look at the Startup tab. On a Mac, check Login Items in System Settings. Turn off anything you do not need straight away.
4. Too many browser tabs
Each open tab uses memory. If you live with thirty tabs open, your computer feels it. Bookmark what you need and close the rest.
5. Back up properly
Ask yourself: if this laptop was stolen today, what would we lose? Use automatic cloud backup for important files, and keep a second copy somewhere else. A backup you have never tested is a hope, not a backup.
6. Use a password manager
Reusing passwords is one of the biggest risks for small businesses. A password manager creates and remembers strong, unique passwords for every account. Turn on two-factor authentication for email, banking and your website.
7. Watch out for phishing
Many attacks start with an email that looks real: a delivery problem, an unpaid invoice, a password reset. Check the sender address carefully and never enter passwords via links in unexpected emails.
8. Know when to upgrade
If a computer is several years old and still slow after these checks, more memory or a solid-state drive can give it a new lease of life. Sometimes a replacement is simply better value than the hours lost waiting.
