Anchor text is the clickable text in a link. In "see our local SEO services", the anchor text is "local SEO services". Search engines use it as a clue to what the linked page is about.
Internal links: you are in control
Links between pages on your own site are the easiest SEO win most businesses miss. Use clear, descriptive anchor text:
- Good: "our web design service"
- Weak: "click here" or "read more"
Descriptive anchors help visitors, screen-reader users and search engines all at once.
Links from other sites: keep it natural
When other websites link to you, most will use your business name, your web address or a natural phrase. That is exactly what Google expects to see. If a large share of your backlinks use the same exact keyword, such as "cheap plumber Leeds", it looks manufactured and can work against you.
A healthy mix looks like
- Your brand name: "Page 1 Google"
- Your web address: "page1google.co.uk"
- Natural phrases: "this guide to local SEO"
- Only occasionally, a keyword phrase
